Helicopter Tour of Maui

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

One of the most scenic options you have while in Hawaii is taking an aerial tour of Maui via a helicopter. As you are up in the helicopter, you will see views you could only imagine on the ground.

Many people only have the privilege of seeing Maui from the windows in an airplane. This view might seem spectacular, but it is a fairly quick event, and depending on the height of the plane, may not offer the true beauty of a flight closer to home.

Helicopter tours on Maui range in price from modest to expensive. However, if you have the means while you are on vacation, this type of tour is highly recommended. Depending on the tour you choose to take, you will see part or all of Maui or a collection of small islands and Maui, as well.

As you travel in the helicopter, you will see waterfalls as you fly above them. You will see the towering cliffs, mountains, streams, and the floor of the rainforest. Many tours will take you by the historic Iao Valley, where they will teach you about the culture and history of the area.

A tour guide will be onboard the flight to fill you in on all you see and the history and geography behind what you are viewing. In most cases, you will fly over the Haleakala Crater, Hana Town, the Hana Rainforest, and the Oheo Gulch. You may fly over Maui completely and see the rugged shorelines and the rocky cliffs on certain parts of the island.

Below is a list of the aerial tours of Maui via helicopter.

Island Tours

Complete Island of Maui Helicopter Tour

In this tour, you will see all of Maui from the air. You begin the tour at the heliport and will be guided by certified tour guides who know all there is to know about Maui. You will see Hana and the Rainforest, Oheo Gulch, the Northeast portion of Maui, Haleakala Crater, and much more. The price for this tour ranges from $279 - $309, though this depends on the particular aircraft being flown during the trip.

Blue Hawaiian Tours

Depending on the tour you take, you will spend 30 to 90 minutes viewing places like the West Maui Rainforest, the West Maui Mountains, Hana and Haleakala, the island of Molokai, or other islands or areas of Maui. You can even take a complete tour of the island if you want. You will see a variety of landscapes from volcanoes to hidden waterfalls. Prices for this tour range from the low $100s to just under $300.

Full Circle Island Deluxe

This helicopter tour will take you through Maui’s Valley Isle. This tour lasts for an hour and gives you a chance to explore the Haleakala Crater from the air. You will reach as high as 10,023 feet. Additional travel spots include the Hana Rainforest, the northeastern coastline of Maui and the West Maui Mountains. This tour comes to $270.00.

These are just a few of the aerial helicopter tours on Maui. If you would like additional options, you can speak to your hotel clerk about scheduling something with one of the local companies.

Do You Want to Know What Happened to Karl?

Monday, May 28th, 2007

Karl Rove had not felt that way in years. The Democrat’s mid term election victory of 2006 had had a profound effect on him to the extent that he considered it a personal defeat. For the past several years he had deftly manipulated the strings of the Bush Administration with such enviable results that friends and foes alike considered the results he obtained as the product of exceptional wisdom, courage and political vision.

He recalled that famous phrase by Winston Churchill that defined how he and President Bush felt about their accomplishments: ‘Victory at all costs, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.’ But the election results had changed the survival angle; he kept thinking of his sizeable home mortgage and the mounting expenses of his several homes.

.

He mentally reviewed the magnificent scenario he developed for the invasion of Iraq. The very term ‘War on Terror’ was born at that time and profited from the country’s revulsion and fear caused by the 9-11 attack on New York by the Al Qaida terrorists. Aided by a president bent on becoming a heroic statesman he had successfully installed in the American psyche the politics of fear and terror.

He had basked in the adulation, recognition and respect of the Administration, the media and the public in general. He smiled when he recalled the card sent to him by an admirer where he was portrayed wearing Superman’s costume and flying above the White House.

The Mid term elections of the year 2006 put a stop to the aura of invincibility and self confidence that had been supported by victory after victory. All of a sudden he was on the outside looking in. He began to notice the subtle changes in the adoration of his peers. Gone were the respectful greetings, the obsequious comments and congratulations, and the stream of requests for advice on all matters.

Even the president seemed a bit distant. Gone were the effusive greetings and the constantly changing nicknames. Also gone were the impromptu lunches on the private second floor dining room and the informal coffee sessions in the Oval Room.

All these thoughts were parading in his memory as he sat before the window of his office and idly looked at the distant traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue when none other than the president entered his office.

“Karl, I hate to see you sitting in your big chair in front of your empty desk and spend hours looking out the window with that distant look in your beady eyes!”

“What do you want me to do, Mister President? Even before the elections I began to notice a sense of rejection exhibited toward me by almost everyone. Those elections have been my Waterloo! ”

Well, you had it coming. You know, our good friend Doctor Phil always says that the fruit of self confidence is arrogance but that arrogance is really an expression of pusillanimity, whatever that is. He says that its unhappy results involve poor digestion and a touch of impotence. He also says that plotting and cooking up schemes taxes not only the brain but also darkens the soul, whichever comes first. Perhaps you should see a psychic doctor.

“You mean a psychiatrist.”

“Whatever. Besides you are running out of brilliant ideas and clever solutions. Even Tony Snow comes up with good lies and beautiful smoke curtains. That kid is going places. But before the media notices your present condition we can perhaps arrange for an ambassadorship in some quiet place like Andorra, Burkina Faso or Belize where you can help the natives embrace freedom and democracy. You know, diplomatic status will probably keep you out of jail. .”

Old Karl listened to the Boss with some apprehension. He could not help feeling terribly jealous about Tony and disappointed that his razor sharp inventiveness seemed to have deserted him. Worse, he was about to be discarded like an old set of false teeth. Tears were already at the edge of his limpid orbs and he felt that another derogatory comment from the President, his idol, would produce an unstoppable flow of tears and another wave of heartache and anxiety. In a low voice he said:

“Is there anything you can do other than send me away?”

“How about a medal, Karl?”

How to Attract Good People Into Your Life - Part 2 of 2

Monday, May 28th, 2007

In Part 1 of “How to Attract Good People Into Your Life” I discussed how people are initially drawn to us by our external appearance and our apparent outward demeanor. I then moved onto the notion that we must then present ourselves as people worthy of association and friendship. If what you say and what you do are in conflict you will cause confusion. Confusion creates reluctance which can lead to mistrust.

In Part 1 I also promised a little exercise that I said you would find interesting. Here it is:

You will need a pencil and a piece of paper for this. Before we begin, draw a line across the centre of the page to separate it into two halves. Next, I want you to think of two people.

First, I want you to think of a person in your close inner-circle of friends and acquaintances. Do you have that person in your mind? Good. Write his or her name down. Now, write below their name all the qualities that you find so attractive in that person. I want you to list at least six personal traits. You could probably list more than six qualities but let’s just keep it to the top six.

The next thing that I want you to do is somewhat unpleasant but I want you to do it anyway. (Growth often happens when you are put through difficult assignments.) I want you to think of somebody who you find completely obnoxious and repulsive. Got that name? Write it down. This time, write down all the negative things about that person that makes them so unendearing to you. If there are more than six things just limit it to the worst six.

Go back to the first person, your friend. Think for a moment then write one thing about them that they could improve that would make them even more attractive to you. In other words, I want you to think of the one critical thing in your relationship with that person that annoys you a little bit. Nobody is perfect so something should come to your mind. Write it down and circle it.

Now, go back to the name of the person that you really do not like. You have already listed six things that you find unpleasant about him or her. I want you to try hard at the next small task that I am going to request of you. I want you to think about the one thing that you could find either likeable or neutral about this person. In other words, list the one thing that you could at least give them some credit for. Put your prejudice against this person aside for one moment. Think hard. Write it down and circle it.

Finally, and here is the most difficult part. Turn the sheet of paper over. Write your own name across the top of the page. Draw a line down the centre. On the left-hand side list all the qualities that you feel you have that make you a person who others enjoy the company of. Now, on the right-hand side do the same for your faults. If you think that you don’t have any then you are not being honest with yourself. This time don’t restrict yourself to just six. Write as many qualities or faults that you can.

Now for the interesting bit…

Were the personality traits of the person that you admire similar to your own? Look at the two lists. Were some exactly the same? What about the person that you dislike? Was that one positive quality also similar?

Did you find that the negative traits of your least favorite person were opposite to the values that you hold dear? That person’s friends would also embrace his or her values. There would therefore be a high probability that you could not be on friendly terms with those people either. Reciprocally, they would most likely not get on too well with you. The old cliche “birds of a feather flock together” springs quickly to mind.

We are attracted to people of similar values, ideals and mindsets. Consequently, if you constantly strive to become a better person you will tend to attract people with similar high qualities into your growing circle of influence. The reverse of this is also true. Sinking deeper into an abyss of negativity and depression will tend to attract more of those types of people.

The exciting part of all of this is the fact that you have a choice! You can become:

  • more complete, thereby attracting higher quality people into your aura,
  • more depleted, thereby attracting lower quality people into your aura.
  • Which lifestyle will you choose?

How To Choose A Barcode Printer

    Monday, May 28th, 2007

Barcode Printers nowadays comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes with varying price range. It can also either be hand-held or desk bound. Technically, general purpose laserjet and inkjet printers cannot print barcodes by default. Usually, they require a add-on component or module. An example is Capella Technologies which provides barcode printing functionality to standard HP laserjet printers through an add-on flash card. Such barcode printers are usually limited in the number of symbologies that can be used.

Thermal Barcode printers, on the other hand supports multiple symbologies right out of the box. The more common barcode printer manufacturers include zebra and symbol.

There are two ways barcode printers print barcode, the first method is Thermal Transfer and the second method is Direct Thermal. Direct Thermal prints the barcode directly on the label while Thermal Transfer make use of a ribbon and a printhead. The ribbon is heated and the image is etched on by the printhead on a pre-defined area.

Thermal transfer allows you to print barcodes on a wider variety of materials than direct thermal. As such, the type of material you are going to print barcodes on is a crucial factor in determining which barcode printer to purchase.

Larger barcode printers usually have the ability to switch between direct thermal and thermal transfer. One disadvantage of thermal transfer is that the ribbon needs to be changed quite frequently. If you are using the barcode printer in a manufacturing environment, there could be a lot of downtime. A direct thermal printer is faster and is useful particularly where speed is required and you are not printing a lot of barcodes all the time. An example would be in a hospital where each patient warded is given a barcode to identify them.

If you need to print thousand of barcode labels at a time. Look at purchasing one of the thermal printers from symbol or zebra. I found them to be pretty good in terms of speed and functionality. I would advise to get a barcode printer that has a larger print width and a larger print label capacity.

Barcode Printing technology has evolved tremendously over the last few years. Lately, barcode manufacturers have implemented several security features to ensure there is no counterfeit coding. The latest models of barcode printers are capable of printing labels with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Devices) tags in them. Such security features are mandatory in some highly sensitive industries and help to provide a guarantee of authentication.

Writing Press Releases - Getting it right

    Monday, May 28th, 2007

A good news release consists of a short introduction. Journalists call this an ‘intro’. This should total perhaps no more than 25 words. Bear in mind that your text needs to answer the ’six salient questions’: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How? Your intro will cover most but not necessarily all of them. Keep your article short and simple (Kiss). Remember, news is something new and unusual (see Galtung and Ruge, ‘News Values’ in Wikipedia).

The second sentence or ‘lock-in’ builds on the news in the intro. By paragraph three you will probably use the best or ‘killer’ quote from the main source for your story. Always attribute a quote to somebody.

    1. A news item should be in a readable font size, usually 12 point Arial or Times Roman and double-spaced.

    2. The article should be given a unique keyword to identify it. This is called a ‘catchline’. For example, an article about a poisonous snake sent, undetected in the post, might be catchlined “snake” and each page of the news release then numbered Snake…1, Snake…2 etc. This information is placed in the top right-hand corner of every page.

Do not use: 1. A subject’s name, i.e. Blair, because, if they are famous, there could be lots of stories about them in one day, or the name could be confused for that of a fellow journalist. Or, a word so general, like health, that there might be many stories on the subject similarly catchlined. A good catchline will ensure that every page of your news release can be easily identified in a busy media office.

    3. The by-line, the journalist’s first name and surname, should appear at the top left of the page.

    4. Between the byline and catchline should be placed the date on which the article was written. This information helps the editor to judge whether an update will be necessary, especially if the article is a time-sensitive news story.

    5. Your text should have a simple headine of perhaps no more than three words above the intro, telling the reader what the article is about. Try not to attempt a catchy tabloid-style headline. Sub-editors jealously guard their job as the headline writer.

    6. At the bottom of each page, to tell the reader that there is more copy to come, put MORE FOLLOWS, More or just MF (centred).

    7. To tell the editor that the article is complete put the word End or ENDS on the last page.

    8. Don’t forget to include your full contact details on the first or last page.

    Importance of Presentation

Proofread, proofread and proofread. Check the spelling; don’t rely solely on spell check. There are some words that are spelled correctly that are not the word you meant to put in the sentence.

Check the grammar. Again, the word processor’s grammar checker is good to a point, Use the word processing software as your helper but remember that you are the final judge of accuracy. For each news release draft, no matter how small, create a word processing document, name and save it on a disk, memory stick or on the hard drive so you can easily get back to it later. Keep a printed ‘hard copy’ in a safe place.

    Writing style and completeness

You are expected to write clearly and concisely - using complete sentences that flow logically from thought to thought.

Assume that your reader has not read the materials on which you are reporting. Explain the issue to your reader as if she or he knows absolutely nothing about the subject. Don’t assume that your reader has an understanding of jargon or terminology or that he or she knows about the products, services or personnel of the organisation for which you work.

    Sources

Since you are not necessarily an expert on the subject about which you are writing, it is essential that you source the information provided. Even if you are just using facts from a document or webs site, cite the paper, book or internet source. This will give your writing credibility and authority. If you don’t source, it will look like you’re trying to claim the information as your own creation. You don’t want to be accused of plagiarism.

    Be objective.

Try not to use “the first person” (I or we). Carefully put together an outline before you begin writing.

    Bullets and short paragraphs

Break the material into short paragraphs; using bullet points if necessary. Even with bullet points, use complete sentences and be meticulous with grammar and punctuation. Don’t rely on the computer to correct all your errors. If you use bullet statements, be consistent.

In many cases, the best use of bullet points is to make each statement a complete sentence with a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop at the end.

In some cases, however, you may want to use a “lead-in” sentence opener. Make each bullet statement complete the sentence from the lead-in opener. And be consistent.

When using bullet statements, it is usually best to single space within the bulleted statements and double space before and after the statements begin.

    Use Positive Tone

Write in a positive and lay-person’s style. Your objective should be not to unnecessarily offend anyone who might potentially read what you have written on behalf of your organisation. While every issue you write about won’t necessarily be completely upbeat and enthusiastic, each can achieve a proactive note.

    Be conversational

Make your writing sound conversational. Take care to avoid sounding stuffy, stiff, or uncomfortable. Don’t use slang or inappropriate language. Connect with the reader in the same conversational style that you would if you were in the same room with him or her having a conversation. So, don’t use jargon.

    Take time

To achieve the best, most positive tone for your news release; you must take your time when writing. You can’t be in a big hurry. This is particularly important as you develop your writing skills early on.

Proofread again to spot typographical and formatting errors. Read the text out loud to make sure it sounds right.

    Use your own words

Please do not get in the habit of reading printed text and online information and just doing a “copy and paste” into your news release.

The highest form of successful writing is learning from what you’ve read, summarising it in your own words and reporting what you’ve learned. Practice. It is very important that you develop your own style of writing. When you use someone else’s words, it sounds like someone else wrote it.

Put the full name and phone number (including out of hours mobile) in the contact details at the end of the news release. Additional factual information can be provided in a Note to Editors after the contact details.

This might include biographical facts and a short chronology of relevant events. For ideas about news releases, have a look at examples of them on the websites of local councils and the government news network (www.gnn.gov.uk)

    Impossible is Just a Word

    Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who has not fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who has not dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships? Of finally making it big, having our successful home based business, finding the right opportunity, making money, having finally escaped the rat race?

Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that, dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic. This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing. But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I cannot do this. It is too hard. It is too impossible. No one can do this. However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.

Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately for the bumble, bee no one has told it so. So fly it does.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations. If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things you know you can do. Under another header, write the things you might be able to do. And under one more, list the things that that are impossible for you to do.

Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things you know you can do. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads you might be able to do. As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are impossible for you to do to the list of things you might be able to do.

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all. You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic. Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one. Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, No pain, no gain? That is as true as it can be.

So dream on, friend! Do not get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

    A Personal Injury Story

    Sunday, May 27th, 2007

The crisp winds of fall brush by your face, it is Sunday morning, and you are feeling REAL good. Strolling down Main Street, you are mesmerized by the beauty of the quaint architecture. Several steps more, and disaster! Looking elsewhere, you trip on a broken sidewalk, tumble down with a huge thud. The ambulance comes, takes you to the hospital, a storybook Sunday turns into a complete nightmare. Was the City negligent by not fixing the sidewalk? Who is going to pay for your lost earnings while you are healing? A situation like this requires an experienced attorney, who will evaluate the facts, and determine whether a personal injury action should be brought forth. Specifically, this requires the expertise of a Personal Injury Attorney.

In the above scenario, there is a very good chance an attorney will secure you more monetary compensation than you can do for yourself. Personal injury, however, is a specialized field that requires a qualified personal injury attorney to handle the case.

Before you contact an attorney I suggest you prepare the following documents:

    1) Write down as much as you can about the accident itself, your injuries, and any other losses (such as wages) you’ve suffered as a result of the accident.

    2) Make notes on anyone who may have seen the accident, or whom you may have spoken to, or who helped you.

    3) Go back and try to gather evidence, pictures, eye witness statements, any other information, or materials that may help your case.

Once you establish whether it was a result of negligence, it is in your best interest to file your claim as soon as possible. There are time limits if you plan on suing a government, or municipality. Each state has their respective statutes of limitations, so check with your own state on this one.

Personal injury victims with a strong case should not have to pay any out of pocket expenses. Any attorney worth his salt will take on a personal injury case on a contingency basis. This means that the attorney will cover all expenses during the trial, and take his fee as a percentage of the recovery. Typically, this ranges from 1/3 to 1/2 of the total damages. The best place to find the appropriate personal injury lawyer, is through referrals. Ask friends, or relatives, professional lawyers who do not specialize in personal injury cases, however they should guide you in the right direction. In addition, most local bar associations have referral services in which the names of lawyers are available, arranged by legal specialty.

As with anything, prevention is the best medicine. Try to avoid situations that could be potentially dangerous, or harmful. In the rare cases when this is unavoidable, be sure you follow the appropriate procedures, and don’t be intimidated by insurance companies, or government agencies, hire a personal injury attorney, and receive the compensation you deserve.

Adjust to the Shape of the Sushi, Control vs. Flexibility

    Sunday, May 27th, 2007

    {This story is told in the characterization of Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) in Legally Blonde.}

It happened last night. I was having dinner with my friend Marilyn at a killer, new Japanese restaurant in La Quinta, CA, called Okura. The decor is hip, contemporary; the service mixed culture; the food is unbelievably delicious and beautifully presented. I was mentioning to the owner that he resembles Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court. Very eclectic place.

Both Marilyn and I have eaten there before, but I’m a super trooper patron. I’ve introduced many of my friends to the place. In fact, I was just there last week with my pet psychic, Rev. Cathy. It was the perfect place for her since she’s a vegetarian; I guess out of respect for her clients, the animals.

My food choices have been all over their menu; a rarity for me. I think I’m like a lot of people who find a couple winners, and stick to those exclusive items. One of the reasons I’ve felt so comfortable experimenting with a variety of dishes at this restaurant is due to the artistic presentation. Okura has such creative chefs. I find that the shapes, sizes, and arrangement of the food on the plate is as desirable as the food itself.

Everything we ordered was totally delectable, but it all came in unexpected shapes and sizes. We were sad initially because we wanted to eat the pictures we had in our minds from previous dining trips. Then we became determined to figure out why other customers were being served shapes and sizes that we found preferable to ours. We flagged every server and asked them to name the food they just delivered so that we could get that exact same thing next time. Imagine how crushed we were when told that each chef differs in how each dish is presented. We had no control over the situation. We could not manipulate.

Ultimately, we just relaxed into the one aspect of our dining experience that remained consistent: the taste of the food. The more we stopped fighting the presentation war, the better we felt about eating and talking. You can only control so much. For us control freaks, feel good about knowing that we can still exercise control, by controlling our need to control. It is a decision to be troubled over unexpected circumstances; this decision can be reversed at any time. We each have the power to do that.

In the best interests of trying to enjoy life, I tried a new “uncontrol” method of reacting to unscripted incidences. The “uncontrol” philosophy is to exercise control over emotional reactions to situations; or to reconfigure the elements, in some cases. Strive to maintain control over: 1) emotions, 2) decision-making, 3) appreciation.

This morning, at the manicurist (big event at the University of Virginia on Saturday and I have to look my best…presentation is important), the pedicurist misunderstood my polish instructions and put the creams in reverse order. I paused, choosing to let the new color combination develop before rendering the change wrong. Well, I liked the unexpected color. Only words of praised followed, and a good tip. No one got hurt; no bruised egos requiring apologies.

My learning lesson in the last 48 hours has been about control: owning it, managing it, appreciating the benefits of it. It has been a low-stress 48 hours because I’ve been consciously choosing to manage control. I’ve been adjusting to the shape of the sushi.

    Spain’s Other Languages

    Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Despite Castilian (Or Español) being the main language of Spain there are also a number of other languages spoken throughout Spain – many are now recognised officially by the government and regulated by governing bodies to ensure that they remain a part of Spain’s history and diversity.

    Euskara Batua (unified Basque)

Definitely the most interesting language in Spain, Euskara is widely spoken throughout the Basque region of Northern Spain. The majority of Basque speakers live in Spain with a smaller percentage living over the border in Pyrenean France. The Basques are a fiercely proud people and have an extremely developed sense of regional identity. Despite having a large amount of political and cultural autonomy, there is still a strong movement for complete independence from Spain and the terrorist group ETA have been terrorising the nation for 30 years in the hunt for complete self rule for the Basque country. The language itself has 600,000 speakers on both sides of the Franco-Spanish border with about 75% of those hailing from the Spanish side. The language has always proved to be something of a mystery to linguists as it has not been proven to be related to any other language. Euskara bears no relationship to the indo-European family of languages which includes all of the other languages of Europe. Some linguists have started to propagate the theory that the language bears a similarity to the Georgian language from the Caucasus region but conclusive proof has yet to be uncovered. The language itself has been standardised over the past couple of decades – being mainly a rural language, Euskara is subject to several regional variations, however a standardised version, Euskara Batua, has been established for use in the media and in schools.

    Catalan

A romance language, Catalan is spoken not only in Spain but also in parts of Andorra (where it is the national language), and also in isolated areas of France and Sardinia. There are roughly 4 million speakers worldwide who use it as their first language and probably about the same amount who use it as a second language. As a language it is often said to resemble a cross between French and Spanish, although linguists point out that the language bears more in common with Italian in terms of grammar and syntax. Obviously spoken throughout Catalonia there are also several other dialects of Catalan, most notably Valencian. Many in the “Pai Valencia” still claim it is a separate language and this has been the source of much political and linguistic debate over recent years.

    Galician

Lying in the extreme north western tip of Spain, Galicia is one of Spain’s more isolated regions. Yet to be penetrated by mass tourism, the region is subject to some of Spain’s worst weather and is also home to its third largest language. Galician is spoken by 3 million Spaniards in Galicia itself and also in the neighbouring regions of Asturias and Castille-Léon. The language bears strong similarities to Portuguese, a factor that is explained by the close proximity of the region to Portugal. The Portuguese language did in fact develop originally in Galicia and Northern Portugal, before a political split in the 14th century separated the two areas allowing the languages to develop and grow independently of each other. The native Galician will be able to understand most Portuguese - similar vocabulary and word order can be seen across both languages and there is fierce debate once more as to whether they are languages in their own right, or dialects of the same language. Again much of it has to do with the perceived independence of the region that is, in many ways, symbolised by its language. Like Catalan and Euskara, Galician now has an official status and is taught in schools adding weight to the strong social movement to protect and preserve the language.
